The Department of Economics is as old as the Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur; it opened when the University started functioning October 12, 2008. The department is actively engaged in teaching and research. The department of Economics offers knowledge, discipline and academic excellence. The place, over the years, has turned into a vibrant department with strong cooperation between our students and faculties. The department of Economics has following Vision and Mission.

Vision: The vision of the Department of Economics is to maintain and strengthen its leadership as a center of excellence in teaching and research in Economics, to further enhance its international recognition and to contribute towards building a prosperous Bangladesh.

Mission: The mission of the Economics Department is to equip the students with knowledge necessary to achieve sustainable economic growth. It also aims at preparing the students to pursue best possible career and thus creating a generation with economic knowledge.

At present the department has eight faculty members specialized in a range of areas of economic interest. The department has high profile academic curriculums of all the programs be updated enough to address the recent national and international economic issues concerned. The Department has successfully conducted the ‘Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP)’ under the auspices of University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh and the World Bank. The project has facilitated to build up an enriched seminar library with a large collection of books, journals, research papers, thesis, etc., and to develop a sophisticated computer laboratory in addition to many other facilities in the Department. The department believes in modern pedagogy related to interactive method and professional competency. Thus, we are committed to provide the best education in Economics discipline to our students. For this purpose, we beyond conventional class room education to engage our students in knowledge creation for the 21^st century and facilitated seminars, workshops and research program on broader issues related to the discipline.  Noteworthy, Department of Economics has also opened a door for the students to develop their latent talent, augmented research activities, enhancement leadership quality, promotion and practice of cultural activities through establishing Students Economic Forum. By connecting themselves with the Forum they can build a strong mutual relationship and bondage among different batches. I expect that the Department of Economics in its journey through the 21^st century shall gradually gain the status of one of the best Economics schools in the world.

Program offered:

The department offers an undergraduate degree program leading to Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Economics and a graduate program leading to Master of Social Science in Economics. The Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) program spans four years and the Master of Social Science spans one year. Besides, the department offers M. Phil and Ph. D program in different branches of economics.
